- Students at École Polytechnique de Montréal, École de technologie
supérieure in Montréal and Université Laval in Québec City won this
year's Pierre Péladeau Bursaries. The bursaries are awarded annually to
student entrepreneurs enrolled in Québec universities.
The First Pierre Péladeau Bursary, worth $50,000, went to Kyvox
Technologies, a Mirabel-based company which has developed a
high-precision portable ultrasonograph which will improve productivity
in the hog industry.
The Second Pierre Péladeau Bursary, worth $30,000, was awarded to
Développement Effenco of Montréal. Its founders have developed a hybrid
brake energy recovery system for garbage trucks which will enhance
their energy efficiency.
The Third Pierre Péladeau Bursary, worth $20,000, was awarded to
Axoneme, a Québec City business that develops, optimizes and produces
recombinant proteins, which are used in high value-added
pharmaceuticals.
"Once again, the jury was impressed by the calibre of the projects
that were submitted to it and by the entrants' ingenuity," said Érik
Péladeau, Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President of Quebecor Inc.
"We were inspired with confidence in the new generation of Québec
entrepreneurs and with optimism for our economic future."
The Pierre Péladeau Bursaries were created in 1998 to promote
entrepreneurship and support business start-ups by Québec university
students. Students at all Québec universities are eligible. Each year,
bursaries are awarded to the best three projects submitted to the jury.
Since their creation, the Pierre Péladeau Bursaries have distributed a
total of $700,000 to 27 recipients, helping them start their
businesses, carry out their business plans and develop their products
and markets.
The members of the jury for the 2007 Pierre Péladeau Bursaries were:
